My Testimony

by Anthony Jaramillo

My name is Anthony Jaramillo, I am 22 years old and I live in Valencia. I was born in Ecuador, although I have lived practically my whole life in Spain. In 2015, I began catechesis to receive the sacrament of confirmation in the parish of San Dionisio y San Pancracio. Despite the fact that I was already 15 years old and had made my first communion, it was not until almost 17 that I went to make my second but first true confession.

I remember being in the parish, one week before the day of confirmation, with the other boys with whom I was going to receive the sacrament and doing an examination of conscience and waiting. Two priests arrived. One of them was our very beloved Fr. Henry.

I remember that I was a little afraid, because my list of sins was long since it had been a long time since I had approached the confessional. Providentially, Fr. Henry was assigned to me as confessor, who from the very first moment seemed very kind to me. It was a very restorative confession, for he knew how to treat me with complete charity and affection; I thought that he was going to treat me with more severe words, but, on the contrary, I only heard words of encouragement and serenity urging me to live a spiritual life as a “soldier of the Lord”, which I was going to be after receiving the Holy Spirit in confirmation. He did not care about what I confessed, but rather sought that I would leave there with the certainty and peace that God loved me and had forgiven me. That was one of my first experiences with Fr. Henry.

On another occasion in which we were in a car, about to set off on a trip, it turned out that the button for the interior light of the car would not stay pressed and the light remained on. Fr. Henry took a holy card of the Virgin and placed it on the edge of the button, so that it would remain pressed and the light would turn off. One might think that it is an event nothing extraordinary, since he apparently did something logical, but what happened next was what left me thoughtful. The priest said: “Do you see, brothers?, our Mother always helps us when we need her.” I, who at that time was quite skeptical, found the situation to be something normal. However, his words made me reflect on how to see God and Our Mother in every moment of our life.

Now I understand better how great the trust and love in the Lord and in Our Mother that Fr. Henry had was, and it encourages me to want to imitate him. Nowadays I am a member of the HMJ and I can say that it has been largely because of his apostolic zeal with young people and because of the love for God with which he moved our hearts.
